Burma’s transition to democracy will be long and difficult. There is virtually no sector that doesn’t require massive and essential investment. Yet, one priority trumps all others — building a truly multi-ethnic state. For 50 years, the military has ensured the territorial integrity of the state through a combination of violence, repression, and political opportunism. As the military recedes from power and democracy begins to take hold, resolving the political divide between the ethnic nationality periphery and the ethnically Burman center will take on a new urgency.

The Burmese pro-democracy activist, the leader of the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD), has been giving speeches and receiving honors. She stopped in Oslo to pick up a belated Nobel Prize, awarded to her in absentia in 1991, when she was just beginning her long stint in house arrest. (All in all she’s spent some 15 years of the past 24 in detention.)

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF MALAYSIA ON THE DEVELOPMENT IN RAKHINE, MYANMAR

Malaysia has reaffirmed its support and willingness to offer assistance to Myanmar in relation to the recent unrest in the state of Rakhine in Myanmar. Malaysia has also conveyed its deepest sympathy to the government and the people of Myanmar over the ethnic conflict in Rakhine, and expressed its confidence on the ability of the Myanmar government under the leadership of HE President Thein Sein to end the conflict. The establishment of the Investigation Committee, declaration of the State of Emergency as well as cooperation extended to the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser for Myanmar genuinely demonstrated Myanmar’s desire in resolving the situation.
