TQ Prof. Dr Than Win, Rector of Mandalay Medical University for all these pictures.

Here are his comments about our first camp in the Luyechun FB Group.

Than Win

Luyechun programme started in 1964 and I was selected at 7th std. in 1966. The camp started right after the revolution day (Mar.27) and ended only after May day. The uniform till that year was one with long pants and long sleeved shirt and …another was short pants and short sleeved shirt (like boy scouts). The colour of the scarf was light greenish blue ( but luyechuns never wear red scarves like ‘commandos ‘). Us from upper Burma (I was from Mandalay) reported to Meikhtila SHS3 (army school) where we visited Monedaing dam etc even before the official camp. We met those from lower Burma a Thaze station and went up to Inle camp by train.1966 was the first year Inle Khaungdaing camp was opened. Thingyan was at Inle khaundaing camp and stayed there till end of April. 7 and 8 std luyechuns were at Inle and University ones at Ngapali. All met at Rangoon camp – the same old Tagaung, Pyae and Pagan hall – and attended May day and after that the 9 and 10 stds went to Ngapali coam and we went home. The track suits are to be given back after the camp. It is true that we, the young ones who were only 11 + years old at that time, cried at the bank of Inle lake in evenings when we miss our home. In later years the camps ended early and met at the common Rangoon camp around Thingyan. After that 9th and 10th stds go to Ngapali or Inle and the other 2 groups returned home. (I was at Inle 1966, Ngapali 68, Ngapali 70, Inle 71 and Ngapali 71). Those were the days —-

Ko Ko Gyi In 1966 even General Ne Win and Daw Khin May Than had given dinner and shook hands with all of us. Later, 1968 onwards, both of them were overseas for Medical Treatment. Whether to avoid Luyechuns or just coincidence. And we had to attend numerous Dinners that year but later reduced. I think (I am not sure) we went to see Yae Kyaw Khun Nghapaut just outside Meiktila only. Dr TW cried but I was much older and mature at that time. Many cried at the fairwell night also. Dr TW got double promotion twice (I think). For me, I lost some yrs when I transferred to Kingswood Mission English school from the Burmese medium Meiktila Gov school. And my parents refused to accept double promotion twice. So although Dr TW and I were one yr different only he is very young and always energetic.

Ko Ko Gyi Dear Daw Than Than Nu,
Congratulations for your never give up spirit. I wish to share my sufferings due to failures in Luyechun exams.
When I was in seventh Std. at St. Peter’s during the early days of school, there was a full page newspaper article about Luyechun Nwe Nwe Tin, chosen from No 4 SHS, Mdy.. Since then I wish, to become a Luyechun and started to do exercises, collect General Knowledge and read various publications about the Gen Ne Win’s Socialist Ideology and propaganda. In St. Peter’s, as a mission school, there were some bias on new comers and students from B or C classes. As a new arrival in six std. I was sent to 6 th. B. In that school 1st. and final exams were not very important as those were conducted by our respective teachers in the ub classes. Half yearly exams were most important because all of us all the subclass students had to sit in the big hall together with common questions. I 7 th. Std. half yearly exams., our 7 B students were top of all, with the first to 9th positions all from our B class. But for the Luyechun exams, all three were chosen from Seven A. Only when they came back from the exam, we knew about the exam. They all failed but I should avoid commenting about the questions because those kind of questions were popular and used to ask frequently.
After getting Luyechun in 8th. std., I failed in 9 th. std.. Ironically my future father-in-law was the leader of the Luyechun Selection committee.
During the 1966 Luyechun, we met (Dr) Khin Maung Tint from Meiktila. His aunt family was our neighbour and their children not only used to looked down but used to frequently repeat that KMT got the Luyechun again but stupid people like me just lost after lucky once. (KMT and I remained good friends at that time, we were together in IMM.) I even went to invite him to come and stay in our house when Anatomy Prof. U Hla Khaing informed me that he was at a rest room in Chaw Kit, KL. He stayed with us for a month and went back home.
At the school, Sao Ne Win, son of the Wa Sawbwa, my best friend used to address or call me as “Luyechun Pensioner”. He never call me with my name.
After getting the 10 th. std Luyechun, in the 1st. MBBS Jr, although I got top marks in every subject, I was not selected even for preliminary selection because my position was 13 at the time of entrance to IMM, according to ?ILA grade calculations. Actually if look at my total marks, I got second.
So during the Luyechun camp stay in my 1970 1st. MBBS Luyechun, although we were veterans, got 3 times, but as we were not Htut Kwan Luyechuns, we were allowed to wear or use only one Luyechun badge. We were disheartened because the Maths Luyechuns were given two badges. (Please do not angry with my words, dear fellow Maths Luyechuns, we were just jealous)
Those were my failure experiences related to Luyechun.
