The ongoing diplomacy and the so-called “cease-fires” in ethnic areas are seen for what they are-an alibi for the abdication of morality in the altar of profit-making and greed, and a lifeline for the regime.
It has been little more than two months that Aung San Suu Kyi was elected into the lower house of Burmese Parliament. The by-elections (only the country’s third in half a century) in which her party NLD won 44 of the 45 available seats were a crucial test of reforms that convinced the West to soften its pariah image. The United States and European Union hinted that some sanctions – imposed over the past two decades in response to gross human rights abuses (e.g., against the minority Rohingya Muslims and Kachin and Karen Christians) – might be lifted, unleashing a wave of investment, which this impoverished but resource-rich country, bordering Bangladesh, Thailand, India and China, badly needs.
CHIANG MAI – The timing of Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi‘s return to Europe after a 24-year absence could have been better. She leaves her country amid turmoil in its western Rakhine State, where sectarian rioting has claimed scores of victims. The period of unrest has shed a rare light on the volatile tensions that have simmered for years between the country’s dominant Buddhist population and its Muslim minority. (more…)

DHAKA – Baby Fatema was crying in the arms of Mostofa Begum (50), around 11am on June 14, when journalists went to see her at the house of fisherman Kabir Ahmed of Gholapara village in Teknaf, the southernmost point in mainland Bangladesh and a stone’s throw from the Naf river, which separates it from Myanmar. The nearly two-month old baby was rescued by members of the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) from inside an empty fishing trawler that drifted towards Shah Pori Island of Bangladesh on the Naf early on June 13.
So now we know with proof that Rakhines Buddhists and Rakhine Hindus R doing this on Muslims and Rohingyas. CONGRATULATIONS တုိင္း ရင္း သါး မါ ရ မါ ႀကီး မ်ား …
