At the close of the East Asia Summit in Brunei Darussalam, Myanmar officially accepted the chairmanship of ASEAN 2013-2014. Myanmar’s leaders proved to the world that a state’s foreign policy can change an isolated country to an open and democratic country. The transition to a bloc leader requires some crucial measures on the part of Myanmar.

Malaysia Wants Myanmar To Address Violence Immediately

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 (Bernama) — Malaysia has urged the Myanmar government to take immediate action to address the ongoing inter-communal violence in the country.

This was voiced by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman in a bilateral meeting with Myanmar‘s Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin on the sideline of the 46th Asean Foreign Ministers Meeting (AMM) in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei which commenced yesterday.

A statement from the Asean-Malaysia National Secretariat, Foreign Affairs Ministry here said Anifah conveyed Malaysia’s concerned on the ongoing violence, saying it had also affected neighbouring countries, including Malaysia.

He also urged the Myanmar government to take necessary measures to bring the perpetrators of violence to justice in a fair and transparent manner.

PETALING JAYA: Asean can persuade the United Nations to end the persecution of Rohingyas in Myanmar, said International Movement for Just World (JUST) president Dr Chandra Muzaffar.

“Asean has a major role in persuading the five members of the Security Council if they want the UN to act on the atrocities in Myanmar.

“Their voice carries more weight as Myanmar is part of the Asean family,” he said at a recent forum ‘Plight of Muslims in Burma in the 21st Century: An Initiative for Solution and the Way Forward’ organised by the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia.

Dr Chandra said that the UN would be duty-bound to protect the Rohingya if the Security Council adopted a resolution that says they were victims of genocide.
