Roots of empathy: an interview with Mary Gordon

Empathy is central to education for democracy, and it can be “caught not taught” among children in schools. This is the the fourth in our series of articles about empathy and transformation.

What’s the measure of a good education, and what do you want your children to learn in school? Basic proficiency in language, literacy and mathematics perhaps, or a marketable set of skills, or is the purpose of education something deeper? In today’s hyper-competitive culture where standardized test results are used as a proxy for educational advancement, what chance is there for schools to develop creativity, critical thinking, human solidarity and civic skills?

၂။ ျဖစ္စဥ္ႀကီးတစ္ခုလုံးကုိ ျခံဳငုံသုံးသပ္ပါက ေမလ(၂၈)ရက္ ၂၀၁၂ခု သေျပေခ်ာင္းရြာသူ ရခုိင္အမ်ိဳးသမီးငယ္ အသတ္ခံရမႈႏွင့္ မည္သုိ႔မွ မသက္ဆုိင္ေသာ ျမန္မာမြတ္စလင္ ခရီးသြား(၁၀)ဦးကုိ ေန႔ခင္းေၾကာင္ေတာင္ ဇြန္လ(၃)ရက္ေန႔ ေတာင္ကုတ္ျမိဳ႕လည္တြင္ ကားေပၚမွ ဆဲြခ်ျပီး ေသြးေအးေအးႏွင့္ သတ္ျဖတ္မႈမွ စတင္ခဲ့သည္။ ထုိလူသတ္ပြဲႀကီးကုိ သက္ဆုိင္ရာ ေဒသအာဏာပုိင္မ်ားက လစ္လွ်ဴရႈခဲ့ျခင္း၊ အစုိးရပုိင္ သတင္းစာမ်ားတြင္ အသတ္ခံရသူမ်ားကုိ မြတ္စလင္ကုလားဟူ၍ ႏွိမ့္ခ်ေခၚေဝၚျခင္းတုိ႔ျဖင့္ ျမန္မာမြတ္စလင္ မုန္းတီးေရး ပထမေျခလွမ္း စတင္ခဲ့သည္ဟု သုံးသပ္သည္။

၃။ ဒုတိယအဆင့္အျဖစ္ ဆက္တုိက္ဆုိသလိုပင္ ျမန္မာအစုိးရအဖဲြ႕ သမၼတရုံးညႊန္ၾကားေရးမွဴး ဦးေဇာ္ဦး (NOTE:ဗိုလ္မွူးေဇာ္ေဌး pic.)က တစ္ဖက္ႏုိင္ငံမွ အၾကမ္းဖက္သမားမ်ား လက္နက္ကုိင္ က်ဴးေက်ာ္ဝင္ေရာက္လာျပီဟု သူ၏Facebookမွတစ္ဆင့္ လႈံ႕ေဆာ္ခဲ့သည္။ ရခုိင္ျပည္နယ္ရွိ မြတ္စလင္ ႏွိပ္ကြက္ေရး အထိကရုဏ္းႀကီးကုိ ရခုိင္အစြန္းေရာက္မ်ားႏွင့္ ေဒသဆုိင္ရာ အာဏာပုိင္အခ်ိဳ႕ ပူးေပါင္း၍ ဖန္တီး အေကာင္အထည္ေဖၚခဲ့သည္ဟု ယူဆႏုိင္စရာ အေထာက္အထားမ်ားကုိ အထင္အရွား ေတြ႕ရွိရသည္။
