In this Buddhist country, monks enjoy a high social status. But their sense of xenophobia is also strong, especially in face of the Muslims which account for less than 10 percent of the total population.
Myanmar has witnessed several instances of bloodshed in recent years. The conflict between monks and the IslamistRohingya people in Rakhine State last year caused hundreds of deaths and left tens of thousands of Rohingya people homeless.
This March, Myanmar’s central city Meiktila also saw a violent confrontation between monks and Muslims. Raging monks set fire to five mosques and several Islamist communities.
Sittwe, the capital of Arakan State in Western Burma has succeeded in virtually ‘Muslims-Free Street’ ever since the sectarian violence turned to be a massacre against Muslims took place in 2012. From busy market to quiet alley, Muslims have been wiped out to be seen nowhere. Yet they are found either IDPs Camp on the outskirt of Sittwe, or the last Muslims quarter of the city named Aung Mingalar.
“The fear that I felt during this incident, being left totally unprotected by the nearby police, gave me an insight into the fear residents would have felt when being chased down by violent mobs during the violence last March,” he told reporters amid tight security at Yangon airport at the end of his 10 day visit to the country.

U.N. human-rights envoy Tomas Ojea Quintana recounted how a crowd of about 200 people punched and kicked the windows and doors of his car while shouting abuse at him Monday in Meiktila, in central Burma.
Speaking to reporters just before departing the country after a 10-day visit, Quintana said the state had an obligation to protect him.

Actually elder monks from Thanga Nayaka should consider this on the monks who were caught sex with their tagar ma..s. But as Wira Thu was said to be a gay even known as a honey girl while he was in the jail it may be useless for him.
