The international community must focus its attention on the atrocities unleashed on the minority Rohingya Muslim community in Myanmar.By Tariq A. Al Maeena | Special to Gulf News October 19, 2013
The month of October has been very brutal towards the Muslim minority in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. While most of the media’s attention is focused on the chemical warfare in Syria, or the post-US deficit showdown scenario, very little was being reported on the continuing ethnic cleansing in Myanmar. Perhaps it is because the unfortunate victims happen to be poor Muslims and there are no strategic gains to be garnered by trumpeting their sorry state.

The people no one wants to acknowledge
Rohingyas fate is one of Asia’s lesser known refugee tragedies. They are not recognized as a minority people of neither the regime or the opposition in Burma. Instead, they are forced to leave the country for an uncertain existence in other countries such as Malaysia.

Are Myanmar’s Hopes Fading?
May 13, 2013Are Myanmar’s Hopes Fading? By AUNG ZAW Published: April 24, 2013 CHIANG MAI, Thailand
VICIOUS sectarian and ethnic violence has set back the fragile political reforms introduced in Myanmar last year. As tensions flare in the majority-Buddhist country that I and other exiles still call Burma, many fear that the deadly anti-Muslim riots are no accident but the product of an effort led by army hard-liners to thwart both the reforms and Myanmar’s opening to the world.

JEDDAH – Appealing for UN intervention to stop attacks on Muslims in Burma, a world Muslim body has urged the Burmese government to allow in a ministerial delegation to discuss anti-Muslim violence in the Buddhist country.
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation calls on “Burmese authorities to strongly respond to the organization’s appeal and allow a ministerial OIC delegation to visit” Burma, the OIC said in a statement cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP).
More than 43 people were killed and several mosques burnt in a week of sectarian violence in the central city of Meiktila earlier this month.

April 19, 2013“In my opinion, recent conflicts inside the country are [Burma’s] internal affairs,” government spokesman Ye Htut told The Irrawaddy on Thursday, adding that the government had not yet received a formal request for access from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Ye Htut, who is also Burma’s deputy minister of information, said the government had taken good care to handle religious tension and violence against Muslims in the Buddhist-majority nation.
