Surah Al Fathiha for TDM’s sister-in-law, Tan Sri Dr Saleha Ali, the elder sister of Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Ali

Tan Sri Dr Saleha Ali (pic), the elder sister of Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Ali and sister-in-law to former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has died. She was 88.

Dr Saleha died at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital at 5.10pm yesterday after suffering from advanced uterine cancer.

Her eldest son, Zahedi Mohd Zain, 55, said the disease was detected in early December last year.

“Actually, she was diagnosed with uterine cancer six years ago and underwent an operation to remove her uterus then,” he said. He added she had also suffered from breast cancer and other diseases throughout her life.

“But she was a very strong woman. She had great fighting spirit and always recovered. She believed she always had more work to do,” Zahedi said.

Dr Saleha was a patron of numerous social and welfare organisations, including Universal Peace Federation Malaysia, and had contributed in setting up the Scouts and Red Cross movements in Malaysia and the National Council of Women’s Organisations.

Born on Jan 9, 1923, Dr Saleha served in various organisations, including the Selangor legislative council between 1950 and 1952.

The wake, which was held at 11pm yesterday, was attended by public figures including Dr Siti Hasmah and her son Deputy Internatio­nal Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon.

Zahedi said his mother would be buried at the Bukit Kiara Muslim cemetery before zohor prayers today. Source: The Star
